Week Nine Results – Fall 2009 Season

2009 Fall — admin @ 11:59 am

Vancouver United (6-3) 75 – EA Sports (3-6) 70 (OT)

The first half of this game was completely EA’s as they dictated the play, having  United down 17 points at one point but the second half would prove to be much different. United clawed their way back into the game with a balanced effort from their entire squad. Fast forward to the dieing minutes with EA clinging to a slim 61-59 lead. Mio for United makes a big basket to tie the game up at 61. EA turns the ball over with 17 seconds on the clock. United get the ball to their sharp-shooter Hardeep who waits for the final clicks before he jacks up a shot that misses sending this game to overtime, the first extra session of the season in the Metro League. EA come out firing in OT, but United are keeping pace. United, down 68-64 get a monster three from point guard Greg cutting the EA lead to just one with a minute to go. EA go down the floor and miss, United turn the other way and miss on their first attempt but get a huge rebound and put back from big-man Kerri Westmore giving United the 69-68 lead with 30 seconds to play. EA come down the floor and turn the ball over to Greg who gets fouled with EA in the penalty giving Greg two free throws. Greg hits one of two. EA then turns the ball over again on the inbound sending Hardeep to the line with a chance to ice the game. He calmly hits them both giving United a four point lead. EA would get a quick two but would be forced to foul with seconds left on the clock giving United easy free throws to seal the win. United stay in the third place in the Metro League with a very impressive hard fought victory over EA who are slumping badly dropping their fourth game in a row.

Canada One (9-0) 71 – 3D (5-4) 68

It wasn’t the prettiest game from the Metro League’s top team but Canada One remain unbeaten with a win over 3D. This was a rematch of last seasons Metro League final, one that 3D lost so you know they were looking for some redemption and they came out in the first half to prove it. This game was a seesaw battle throughout as either team was able to make much separation from  one another. C1 held a 37-33 lead at the half, but 3D seemed to have an answer anytime C1 looked to try and go a on a run. With under 10 seconds to go and up 70-65 C1 get a huge rebound from star Clayton Crellin that puts him on the line. Crellin hits one of two giving his squad a six point edge with time ticking away. 3D would get three back but the clock wasn’t on their side. C1 get a scare but remain undefeated.

Bullets (5-4) 73 – Sonic Boom (5-4) 65

Bullets Ben Lee had another good week dropping 26 points including four threes while teammate Nick Vojic did his part putting in 22 points helping the Bullets go back over the .500 mark. The Boomer’s got a balanced attack from their entire roster, getting 19 points from top scorer Igor Dutina, 15 and 17 from guards Lonzell Webster and Robbie Loehle and 12 from sharp-shooter Paul Rother but it wouldn’t be enough as Sonic Boom slip out of third in the Metro League Standings.

SWAT (6-3) 80 – Velvet Hoop (4-5) 61

This was a very close game in the first half with Velvet taking a 40-38 lead into the break. In the second the SWAT offense came to life. SWAT used an inside-outside game to break the zone Velvet was playing and got results. Big-man Darren Spithoff and Nick were controlling the paint while sharp-shooter’s Neb Aleksic and Sharlan John were knocking down J’s helping SWAT pull away in the second half. Velvet got a strong game from guard Jason Reynolds (22 points) and big-man Ben Schellenberg (15 points) but it wouldn’t be enough as SWAT remain in third place in the Metro League standings while Velvet Hoop slip back to under .500.

Team Ice (2-7) 76 – Team Nike (1-8) 50

Ice got double-digit scoring from four different players helping them earn just their second W of the season with an easy victory over Nike. Nerad Lojopur and Ernest Lau put in 15 points each for Ice while Jeremiah Al scored 19 points for the Nike in the loss.

Heart, Hustle & Soul (9-0) 125 – Ballhawgs (0-9) 55

H.H.S. remain unbeaten with an easy win over the Metro Leagues basement dwellers, the Ballhawgs. H.H.S. got double-digit scoring from five different players including a week high 37 from big-man Mark Tasic. For the Ballhawgs it was another big week from their top scorer Jason Dmyterko who put down 22 in a losing effort.

2009 Fall — admin @ 12:07 pm

3D (5-2) 73 – Bullets (3-4) 70

This game was was without a doubt the game of the week as these two well matched teams battled throughout the entire 50 minutes. The play went back-and-forth with 10 different lead changes with either team giving the other much of a gap. With just a 1:30 left on the clock and 3D up by four the Bullets got a massive block from Jaime Robinson that kept them in the game. Bullets, down three with 30 seconds left elect not to foul which works out for them as they got the ball back with one last chance to tie. The ensuing play the Bullets just can’t seem to find a shooter and turn the ball over which seals their fate. 3D got huge games from Nate Ashmead (22 points) and Jason Hubbs (19 points), while the Bullets high-man was Ben Lee  with 24 points including four three-pointers.

Heart, Hustle & Soul (7-0) 93 – Team Ice (1-6) 85

H.H.S. remain unbeaten but get a bit of scare from a very tough Ice squad. Led by the hot scoring of Mark Tasic (27 points), Jason Boering (25 points) and Bryson Cool ( 21 points), H.H.S. were able to keep pace with Canada One at the top of the Metro League standings. Ice got a balanced effort with four players scoring in double figures including a solid 19 from big-man Taize Powell, but even with their hard work still find themselves at the bottom of the league with just a one win so far this season.

Vancouver United (4-3) 66 – Velvet Hoop (3-4) 66

Velvet Hoop actually led this 29-27 going into half-time, but the second half proved to be another story. United came to life in the second going on a 16-3 run early, giving them a commanding lead which they never gave up. United was led by one of the Metro League’s top scorers Hardeep, who poured in 25 points, 14 of them coming in the second half. Chris Horwood was the top-man for Velvet Hoop with 14.

SWAT (5-2) 70 – Ballhawgs (0-7) 52

It took SWAT half the game to get themselves together but they managed to pull out the win in the end. The ‘Hawgs were very much in the game early on, holding a slim one-point lead at the 12 min mark, but SWAT countered outscoring the ‘Hawgs 15-7 to close out the half, taking the 34-27 lead into the break. SWAT opened the second half on a 7-2 run and kept pushing the tempo, pulling away from the ‘Hawgs led by forwards Darren Spithoff and Andrew Sturgeon who each scored 17 points.   From the losing side the Ballhawgs got another impressive game from Jason Dmyterko who was the game-high scorer with 20 points.

Canada One (7-0) 105 – EA Sports (3-4) 93

EA dictated the tempo of this game early holding the lead throughout the first half , that is until C1 found some life and took control in the dieing minutes of the first, taking a 57-52 lead into the half. The second saw C1 really pour it on. Once again the two stars from C1, Navi Sekhon and Clayton Crellin were the difference as the two of them went off dropping 38 and 36 points respectively. EA’s top stud Mike Baxter did his best to keep his squad in putting down 37 points but it wouldn’t be enough as C1 parted the seas in the second half to remain undefeated.

Sonic Boom (4-3) 115 – Team Nike (1-6) 46

Lead by 25 points from Igor Dutina, 23 from Paul Rother and 20 points from Robbie Loehle, Sonic Boom go a game over .500 with a blow-out win over Team Nike. In what was a lopsided game Nike just couldn’t seem to find a rhythm which the Boomers took advantage of cruising to the easy win.

Week Six Results – Fall 2009 Season

2009 Fall — admin @ 11:13 am

Velvet Hoop (3-3) 79 – EA Sports (3-3) 77

This was the game of the night as these two teams battled right down to the wire. Down four points in the dieing minutes, EA got a massive three-pointer from James Hudson cutting Velvet Hoop’s lead to just one, 77-76. Velvet’s main man Chris Horwood squashed EA’s comeback attempt with two huge free throws in the final seconds, giving his squad a very solid 79-77 win. EA actually held the half time lead 38-35, but went cold in the second half allowing Velvet to go on a 16-5 run midway through led by some solid defense from Trevor Shaw that gave Velvet the lead, which they never relinquished. Horwood was on fire all night dropping a game-high 33 points, while on the EA side Hudson couldn’t be stopped putting down 32 points including six threes. Ben Schellenberg scored 18 for Velvet Hoop while Matt Mahar added 15 for EA in a losing cause. EA’s star Mike Baxter had a rough night scoring just 13 points before fouling out with just under five minutes to go in the game.

SWAT (4-2) 77 – Team Ice (1-5) 68

It wasn’t the prettiest win for SWAT but it was a win none-the-less. Ice started off the game on an 8-0 run before SWAT gathered themselves off the floor, going on a 21-9 run led by some stellar drives from point guard Chris Peerless and some tough inside work from Grady Halley taking the 21-17 lead just 10 minutes into the game. Ice stayed in the game with their signature ball movement and good outside shooting, but SWAT with it’s considerable size advantage held a ten point lead going into the half. Ice stayed in the game in the second half led by Taize Powell who scored eight of his 11 points in the half, but SWAT would hold Ice off with some solid inside work from sensational forward Nick Paret who dropped 10 of his 15 points in the second, helping his squad earn the 77-68 victory. Peerless led all scorers with 19 while Nerad Lojojpur was the high-man for Ice with 15.

Heart, Hustle & Soul (6-0) 84 – Sonic Boom (3-3) 61

On paper this game looked to be the game of the night as these two squads are very similar teams. H.H.S. saw things much different. Led by the dynamic duo of Mark Tasic (25 points) and Jason Boering (29 points), H.H.S. put this one out of reach early taking a 23 point lead going into the half. The second half saw the Boomers come back to life, jumping out on a 15-2 run to cut the H.H.S.’s lead to just 10, but H.H.S. would counter with a 14-6 run of their own that would bring their lead back to 18 points which they never let go. Boering led all scorers while Boomers star Igor Dutina led his squad with 23.

Vancouver United (3-3) 93 – Ballhawgs (0-6) 59

United jumped out the gate guns a blazing taking a 29-9 lead just 10 minutes into the game. Ballhawgs just couldn’t seem to get their game together as United had their way with them taking a 33 point lead into the half. United, led by sharp-shooter Hardeep who dropped a game-high 38 points including seven threes, kept the heat on the ‘Hawgs in the second half cruising to the easy win. Jason Dmyterko did his part for the ‘Hawgs putting in 22 points for the losing side.

Canada One 100 (6-0) – Bullets (3-3) 71

This was the tale of two teams for the Bullets. Playing the undefeated reigning champs, the Bullets were very much in this game in the first half down just eight points, 48-40, going into the break. Bullets, led by Ben Dove who dropped 14 of his 15 points in the first half including four threes helped keep his team in the game. However this game is played in 50 minutes and not 25 which the Bullets found out quickly. The second half saw the wheels fall off for the Bullets as C1 went on a 19-0 run holding the Bullets to no baskets for the first 10 minutes of the half. C1 stars Navi Sekhon and Clayton Crellin led the attack, with Navi tossing a lob off the backboard for Crellin to throw down the thunder dunk in the early stages of the half crushing the Bullets leading to the C1 blowout. Crellin, the Metro League’s leading scorer put down 34 points (24 in the second half) while his teammate Sekhon had a strong 30 for the winning side. Dove led the Bullets with 15 though was invisible just as the rest of his team were in the second half.

3D (4-2) 108 – Team Nike (1-5) 62

Taylor Cherris was the star of the game for 3D dropping an impressive 31 points including seven threes as his squad cruised to an easy win. Nike just couldn’t handle last years Metro League finalists even with the help from league commissioner and SWAT stud Mark Starkey suiting up for the Nikey side. Nike were led by Joe Tozzi who poured in 20 points in a losing effort. Cherris led all scorers while Nate Ashmead supplied 21 for the winners.

Sonic Boom (3-2) 91 – Team Ice (1-4) 87
Sonic Boom held off a strong effort from Team Ice backed by an astounding 49 points from Igor Dutina, who poured in 36 of those in the second half when the Boomer`s needed it the most. Ice, running with a very small squad, spread the floor with quick ball movement and great team speed to keep the game close throughout. Gunning off an early second half 19-10 run, Ice held a six point lead with 14 minutes left, but that`s when Dutina took off. Dutina single-handedly brought his Boomer squad back in the game with an array of buckets including six threes-three of them coming late in the second half. Ice had little to contain Dutina and found themselves in foul trouble in the dieing minutes. Sonic Boom took advantage of Ice being in the penalty and iced the game in the final minute with Dutina hitting four of six clutch foul shots to seal the deal, easily the best one of the night.

Canada One (5-0) 105 – SWAT (3-2) 92
The Canada One machine keeps on rolling after an impressive win over a highly skilled SWAT team. Canada One`s outstanding point guard Randy Nohr was the star of the game dropping a game-high 34 points and countless fast break dimes which was the demise for SWAT. Under-maned for the second straight week, SWAT made the best of their efforts in the first half holding a slim lead with just over 10 minutes to go in the half. The short bench was too much for SWAT as Canada One just kept pushing the ball in transition which killed SWAT`s chances in the second half. Canada One`s young star Clayton Crellin put down 27 while Navi Sekhon poured in 22. The SWAT squad displayed a balanced attack with forward Nic leading the way with 39 points-playing the entire second half with four fouls. Nedim Malushaga scored 21 on some solid outside shooting while big-man Sherlan Long dropped a tough 20 points in a losing affair.

Heart,Hustle & Soul (5-0) 108 – Vancouver United (2-3) 71
Fueled by 28 points from sensational swing-man Jason Boering, 24 from lights out three point shooter Brent Charleton and 20 points from the always steady Mark Tasic, H.H.S. put on a display of how to play team basketball with a very big win over Vancouver United. Boering dominated the early stages of the game dropping 25 of his 28 points in the first half. H.H.S. were running the ball in transition and making their shots when they had them, taking a commanding 62-43 lead going into the break. United, who play balanced team ball themselves just never could find a rhythm. Vlado led the way for United with 19 points but was ice cold in the second half. United also got 17 from AJ and 16 from Kerri Westmore, but it just wasn`t enough as H.H.S. cruised to the easy W.

Bullets (3-2) 86 – Velvet Hoop (2-3) 60
This was a very close game at half time with the Bullets clinging to a slim five point lead at the break. The Bullets jumped out on a 12-4 run to start the second half and didn`t hold up. Ben Lee and Jamie R. led the way for the Bullets dropping 15 points, while Chris Horwood was the games high scorer with 18 for Velvet Hoop.

3D (3-2) 80 – Ballhawgs (0-5) 50
