Things are heating up in Vancouver and we are readying to welcome 10,000 athletes to the World Police & Fire Games. The Games are introducing us to newer events like Ultimate Firefighter and Toughest Competitor Alive, but don’t worry basketball is still alive and well.
In fact, a few of our very own men in uniform will be taking on the world in the 3×3 and 5×5 basketball tournaments up at SFU from July 31 – Aug 9. Come up and catch the international bball display with representatives from Italy, Bermuda, Hong Kong, Spain, Finland and the US. But, if you can only make time to trek up Burnaby Mountain once, be sure to catch the 5×5 finals on August 9th, where we hope to see Navi Sekhon, Bob Hielttes and Eric Butler take the gold from the likes of top ranked LAPD, FDNY and Toronto Police teams.
Check out the full schedule of events: www.2009wpfg.ca. For those of us who can’t compete, there is always the beer gardens: Vancouver Convention Centre and Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.
Several of the Metro League guys took their game outdoors to the sizzling courts at the Dolphin Classic in Richmond this past weekend. The local teams had to battle a very tough Calgary-based team as well as the super athletic Seattle team. The X-Falcons team made their way to the final and nearly took down the Home Team’s high-leaping and trash-talking Americans. Even our own Jordan Yu was a finalist in the 3-point competition! Congrats to the following guys who survived the hard courts, heat, and the beer garden!!
Andrew Sturgeon
Navi Sekhon
Randy Nohr
Graeme McCallum
Jordan Yu
Mark Tasic
Jamie Robinson
Mark Starkey
Zach Russell
Kyle Russell
** special honours go to Alex Zabori who was a beer garden champion!
Vancouver Basketball and West Coast Classic’s own beat-writer, CB, was courtside in Vancouver this weekend to hook you guys up with some wicked dunk contest footage. Check out Kevin Kemp (the Golden Child, aka ‘The Elevator’) and Henry Bekkering out here just killin’ it.
