A self-professed gym rat, I’m pumped for the opening tip of the second season! For me, sport is about connecting with people, conquering challenges and glimpsing moments of perfection. Witnessing the unbelievable is the lure of sport and this league is full of guys who can make the impossible happen.
I fell in love with this sport long ago, enjoyed the thrill of playing unconsciously and feeling in complete control of the game. Like any legit basketball junkie, I’m mesmerized by watching a point guard stalk the key; his eyes quickly assessing the mismatches as he schemes the best line of attack. Feeling the chills of anticipation as a 6’5” guy makes a steal at half court, glides down the court, leaving everyone to guess how he will throw it down. The quiet hush that settles over the gym as a long three arcs towards the basket; the shooter’s eyes intently tracking the ball as it goes over the rim, his eyes only closing after the sound of that glorious “swish”.
The guys in this league are continually seeking to improve their game and this relentless pursuit of perfection is a joy to watch. Perhaps the most striking feature of the league is its high level of professionalism and camaraderie. It’s truly an amazing group of organizers, players and referees who have joined together to build the best league in the Lower Mainland. They share a passion for sport, exemplify heart and hustle, and demonstrate a deep commitment to community.
There are many untold stories of these guys and their many positive contributions on and off the court. Throughout the season, this blog will introduce you to some of these phenomenal people and summarize game highlights. Stay tuned and as always, we encourage your input.
After all . . . “This Is Your League. Bring It.”

What a year it was!
And to kick off 2009 in style, we’ve launched the 2009 Metro Basketball League Shoe Drive.
Bring in that pair of kicks that haven’t seen the light of day in the last year to any Metro League game in 2009 and support the Vancouver Metro League Shoe Drive. We’ll be giving these shoes to some folks that need them and handing out Nike gear to the team that donates the most pairs of kicks!
